The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) released a final rule in November 2024 for delivery of an efficient rollout of smart meters to all customers by 2030.

As your electricity retailer, it is our responsibility to arrange the installation of a new smart meter with remote communication capability.

Smart meters differ from basic meters in a couple of ways. For starters, they measure your consumption with greater accuracy.

But more importantly, smart meters track your consumption every 30 minutes and are read remotely without your distributor having to come out to your property to take a manual reading, except in circumstances where an error occurs with the equipment, but this is rare.

Apart from the increased accuracy and the ability to be remotely read, if you’re a Kogan Energy customer, a smart meter allows you to get even more out of our usage tools through the Kogan Energy App and Online Account.

As info about your usage will be continuously measured, it means you’ll have access to almost live info about the electricity you’re using. That means you’ll be able to better manage your usage and make every day decisions to use less and save money.

Kogan Energy has worked hard to find a way to roll out smart meters at no cost to the customer. The smart meter installation will be free for all standard meter installations.

However if a non-standard meter installation is required Kogan Energy will pass on the cost of the installation.

Examples of non-standard meter installations could include where minor asbestos removal, fuse replacements and link installations are needed.

Yes! When you sign up to Kogan Energy, select the option ‘I’m planning to move to a new house soon (and want to set up Kogan Energy for my new house)’. 
Here you can give us the details of when you will be moving and where you will be moving to.

At the moment Kogan Energy supplies only to residential properties. However, we may provide our services to businesses soon! Contact our friendly team on 1300 005 123 or info@koganenergy.com.au and we’ll let you know if this changes.

You can switch to Kogan Energy if there is no supply to your property or if you have been disconnected. We will arrange for your power to be connected but a reconnection fee will be charged.
Please note, you may be unable to switch if you have an outstanding amount with your existing retailer. Some retailers will not allow you to switch until payment is cleared.

1. If anyone at the property has life support equipment, please contact us to register the details as soon as possible. Registering your home or business as requiring life support is important so we can apply life support protections.
2. By registering the life support equipment, we’ll make sure you’re kept up-to-date on any retailer planned energy supply interruptions. That means you’ll receive life support protections, including at least four business days’ prior written notice of retailer or distributor planned outages. If you’ve already registered with your distributor, they’ll let us know.

You can easily sign up online! All you need is your preferred payment details (credit card or bank account) and the information that we request about you and your property. 
It typically takes between 3 to 4 weeks to switch your supply in Victoria, South East Queensland and South Australia. In New South Wales it may take longer. We’ll keep you updated on the progress of your switch via email.

Kogan Energy does not have joining fees or exit fees. There may be a fee from your distribution network for a meter read or reconnection that we will pass through, but we do not add any admin costs to this charge.

No, your power won’t be cut off (unless your current supplier has informed you of disconnection because of outstanding payment). Switching to Kogan Energy just involves transferring your information.

We’ll take your preferred payment details at sign up so you can use them to pay your account once you’re a customer. You can change or add new details later.

By entering your preferred payment details you are giving us permission to take money out of your account to pay for your power. In addition, to ensure that we have the correct bank account details Kogan Energy has a Direct Debit Confirmation Process that works in three steps:

1. We deduct $1 by direct debit from your allocated bank account and include a five-character confirmation code in the reference field. This is to test that we have the right account number for you.
2. We credit the $1 to your Kogan Energy account for future use, and email you with a link to confirm your direct debit.
3. To set up your direct debit*;* check your bank statement, find the 5-character code, click the link in the email and enter the code to confirm we can activate your direct debit.
